$ US Dollar

The dollar is the reference against which the rest of this set is measured. It settles the largest share of cross-border trade, it is the easiest of the seven to obtain and hold, and its market absorbs size without moving. What it cannot do is diversify you: a portfolio already denominated in dollars gains almost nothing in FX terms by holding more of them, which is why its diversification axis sits at 38 while everything else sits high.
